Journey Through The Bible (Colossians 4)

Posted in Bible Study on March 28, 2009 by vhost

Continuing my online study of the Book of Colossians, Chapter 4:

* We should devote ourselves to prayer, even when our prayers are unanswered.
* A prayerful attitude is not a substitute for regular prayer times but an outgrowth of it.
* We should make the most of every opportunity to share the Gospel with unbelievers.
* Speech that is gracious is kind and courteous.
* Speech that is effective invites interaction.
* Believers should always be ready to share their faith and share words of personal testimony.
* Being connected to other believers will strengthen our faith and be an encouragement to us.
* Our prayer should focus on asking God to strengthen our faith, being fully confident in the will of God.
* The early church showed unity by sharing greetings (fellowship) with one another.
* We should encourage each other to go beyond our current level of spiritual achievement.
* Paul refused to stop preaching the Gospel, even when imprisoned in chains. We should have the same attitude.

Journey Through The Bible (Colossians 3)

Continuing my online study of the book of Colossians

Chapter 3
– The theme of chapter 3 affirms the believer’s new position in Christ & how to life a life as a Christian.

* Paul teaches that we most focus our hearts and our minds on Jesus Christ.
* Our heart shapes our passion and our thoughts shape our priorities.
* We can strengthen our hearts through: constant prayer, reading scripture, fellowship with believers, worship, focusing on the eternal not the temporal, etc.
* We must see ourselves and both “dead and alive”.
* When we accept Christ as our Savior, our life is “in Christ” and God sees us through Him… our new life. That’s because Christ died for us; the penalty that we should have paid, so our old life is “hidden” through Christ.
* Our earthly nature is selfish temptation. We must remember what Christ has done for us to overcome that nature.
* Our motivation is not trying to follow rules, but simply to have faith in Jesus and let Him lead us.
* Sin can tempt us, but it cannot force our behavior.
* We can not stop the temptation, but we can put to death the decision to do these temptations. This is a day by day experience of faith.
* It is not our willpower that overcomes temptation; but God’s power. Trust Him.
* Are we growing in Christ? Look to see if we’re putting off the old (way of thinking) and thinking in the new way (the way of Christ).
* We must put on the love of Christ: compassion, kindness.
* Loving like Christ helps us to avoid temptation. Instead of spending time saying “no” to temptation (we’ll eventually fail doing that), we’re saying “yes” to serving & loving.
* In order to love others, we must recognize that we are loved.
* Instead of wanting revenge, we must pursue a commitment to love. When it’s hard to do this we must remember to forgive because we are forgiven.
* Who has the final say in your life? Let Christ be the “umpire” in our hearts.
* We should study God’s word like explorer’s would explore unknown territory.
* Our singing skills have nothing to do with whether or not we should sing in church. If we’re not singing, we’re missing out on a chance for fellowship with our Lord.
* To do something in the name of Christ means we’re looking for His purpose and His power.
* Submission 1) doesn’t cancel our equality, 2) is something all believers do with each other (not just wives), 3) means unselfish actions, 4) it is not something that is not imposed; it is a choice.
* True spiritual leadership in marriage involves service and mutual respect.
* God hates slavery, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t give instructions for how slaves and masters should behave.
* The power that makes (all) relationships work in unselfishness. The perfect example of unselfish behavior is Jesus Christ.

Journey Through The Bible (Colossians 2)

Posted in Bible Study on March 13, 2009 by vhost

I continue my online study of the book of Colossians.

Chapter 2
- The basic theme of chapter 2 is to guard against false teachers.

* Being united in love (with other believers) helps us to truly know Christ.
* True wisdom/true knowledge comes from Christ alone.
* Deceitful arguments are often mostly true; just slightly false which could cause us to fall for the deceit.
* As believers, we should draw our spiritual nourishment from Christ by being “rooted” in the love of Christ. Being rooted comes from knowing His truth.
* How do we recognize Truth from deception? Through Christ.
* Jesus limited himself (by becoming a man) but did not lessen himself.
* The philosophy of men is to live our lives according to our wills, our own selfish desires.
* “Circumcision” under Christ means cutting away of our sinful nature. This circumcision represents a change of heart produced by the Spirit of God.
* Baptism (burial) represents the death of our old sinful nature.
* Christ canceled all our sins through His death of the cross.
* Spiritual power comes from the cross, not our works.
* Watch out for people who judge you by their standards. Don’t let them trap you into legalism. Christ has set us free from legalism.
* Watch out for those with false humility. Their humility is pretentious and prideful. They can be recognized by their boasting of their own experiences and by their legalism, not the truth of Jesus.
* False teaching always denies Christ.
* False teaching often teaches the belief we must do things “right” to earn God’s favor. We don’t earn it.
* Legalism can produce a person who appears to be humble, wise and disciplined. But no amount of piety can change a person’s heart. Only the Holy Spirit can do that.
* Fellowship with believers, fellowship with Jesus Christ; those things produce true value.

Mario Kart (useless) statistics

Posted in Gaming on March 7, 2009 by vhost

For about the last ten months or so, I have been playing Mario Kart with co-workers during lunch breaks. Every day up to four of us break out our Nintendo DSs and race 9-10 times (3-lap race on one of 32 tracks) during our 30-min lunch break.

What’s all this mean? I’ve won 1,979 times and lost 3,239 times. That’s a lot of racing!

Record versus “Mo”: 316-1200
Record versus “Bad Dog”: 721-1096
Record versus “Brandon”: 677-833
Record versus “CLP G5″: 11-11
Record versus “Mad Chatter”: 194-29

Journey Through The Bible (Colossians 1)

Posted in Bible Study on March 6, 2009 by vhost

I’ll be sharing my thoughts as I study the Book of Colossians.

Chapter 1

* Christ wants us to do ministry together in community. It’s not just “me & Jesus.”
* Loves springs from faith; faith springs from hope; hope springs from Christ.
* The way that I love God changes the way that I love others. Love is an action and an attitude; not just an emotion.
* God has given us the privilege of spreading the Good News.
* Knowing God’s will is one of the biggest challenges in life.
* God’s perspective changes our attitude and our hearts, compared to our own perspective. Ask God for spiritual wisdom.
* God’s will is not an itinerary for our lives, but it’s a relationship that allows us to discover God’s perspective for us.
* Patience is the ability to stand firm against opposition without giving up.
* Endurance is the ability to continue toward a goal despite the obstacles.
* When we recognize Christ’s supremacy, it changes our heart, our attitude and our trust of Him.
* We have to continually examine our own hearts to make sure we’re NOT serving ourselves. Ask these questions:
– Are we suffering for Christ (being persecuted because we follow Christ)?
– What is our reason for serving people?
– Do we have a big vision for people (seeing all people in Christ)?
– What is our source of strength?
