God’s call

Posted in Discipleship on February 27, 2009 by vhost

The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!” Jeremiah 1:7-8

Life features many moments that can make you feel inadequate or unqualified. We often lack the confidence to eagerly accept God’s call mostly because we haven’t grasped the simple truth that God never calls anyone to do something without first equipping that person.

The next time you feel overwhelmed or unqualified to carry out what God has called you to do – congratulations! The Lord has you right where He wants you, in a place of humility and dependence on Him for the empowerment you need.

Web Site Round Up

* HULU.COM: It’s been awhile since I’ve visited hulu.com, but it was worth the time to re-visit. At Hulu.com, you can watch hundreds of television shows for free… some dating back to the 1970s. Tonight I watched a few minutes of a show called “Galactica 1980″, a short-lived sci-fi show where the Battlestar Galactica group found Earth.

* TWITTER.COM: I’m getting into Twitter. At first, “twittering” seemed like a silly thing to do, but I’m beginning to see the value in it. The best way to explain Twitter is that it is a communications tool unlike email but a little like email, unlike RSS feeds but a little like RSS Feeds, unlike blogs but a little like blogs. Check it out for yourself. You can sign up for a free account.

* MEEBO.COM: Meebo.com is a web site that allows you to sign in to multiple chat clients: MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk, AIM and others. No need to download and install a client; just go to the Meebo web site. Perfect for work or public computers.

* DINGITSUP.COM: This site will inform you when a web site you choose is down, or back up again. Configure it to email you, twitter you and text message you the status of a web site. Very nice if you want to be the first to know if your site is down.

KatMouse

Thanks to Steve Gibson, I found a free Windows utility called KatMouse that is a fantastic enhancement for your mouse scroll wheel.

This program adds a couple of nice features to mouse wheel scrolling. First, it will enable mouse scrolling for older programs that don’t work with a scroll wheel (I use a few of those), and 2) it will enable you to scroll windows by simply hovering your mouse over a program, even if the program is in the background of your desktop. In other words, you don’t have to click on a program (and bring it in to so-called “focus”) in order to use KatMouse to scroll.

The program is free and is available only for Windows. It works in most versions of Windows, including Vista.

P.S. – If your name is “Mrs. Vhost” and you’re interested in this program, you have permission to download and install it without consulting the IT staff. :)

The Truth of Scripture

Posted in Discipleship on February 19, 2009 by vhost

I came across this Scripture this morning:

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (ESV)

Wow… is that an accurate description of our society today? Truth is so relative these days… follow many paths to God… decide for yourself what is right and what is wrong…

Misc Thoughts

Just a few random thoughts….

AMAZING RACE – One of our favorite TV shows, Amazing Race, started last night. One of the 11 teams is a mother and her deaf son. Talk about a handicap, right? Wrong! They won the first leg and it was very, very cool watching them celebrate their improbable win. Never sell yourself short and celebrate your victories in life.

NAZI ZOMBIES – I completed the single player campaign of Call of Duty: World at War on Sunday. This means I unlocked a very cool game call NAZI ZOMBIES, a game mode where four players cooperatively try to fight off an increasing number of undead Nazi soldiers. My good buddy Jacob had already unlocked it so I have gotten to play it before and it’s a lot of fun.

NETFLIX – My wife and I tried a free two-week membership to Netflix and we liked it so much we’re regular members now. We pay $9/month and can get as many movies as we want (which adds up to about 10-12 a month max). I’ve already seen more movies in 2009 than I did in all of 2008! But what’s even better is streaming movies. We can go to Netflix.com, put a movie (or TV show) in the “Instant Queue” and be watching it on my XBOX in just a minute or two. The quality is excellent, the convenience is second to none. The only negative is that NETFLIX has a pretty limited supply of streaming movies. Most new releases can not be streamed. But on the plus side they have an amazing number of streaming TV shows (CSI, Heroes, Disney shows, etc).

Valentine’s Day

A little Scripture in recognition of Valentine’s Day…

Song of Solomon 4:9-10 (GW)

My bride, my sister, you have charmed me. You have charmed me
with a single glance from your eyes,
with a single strand of your necklace.

How beautiful are your expressions of love, my bride, my sister! How much better are your expressions of love than wine and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice.
